About the Authors

Charlie Winger first visited Joshua Tree along with a group of climbing friends from the Colorado Mountain Club in the late 1980s.  After a week-long venture filled with thrills, challenges, defeats, sand-bagging, raw fingertips, stinky climbing shoes, laughs, and beer, he was hooked.  He returned the following spring, then again with neophyte Diane a month later, offering her the dubious thrill of an introduction to friction climbing (“There aren’t any holds!”  “Sure there are.  Put your foot on that shadow there.”)Charlie & Diane Winger taped up for crack climbing at Joshua Tree

The bug had struck again.  The Wingers began a tradition of scheduling one- or two-week J-Tree trips every spring; they then discovered the joys of climbing in the fall, and even tossed in some trips in between.  They like to stay in shape for their Joshua Tree trips by climbing local crags in their native Colorado.

Charlie is a prolific mountaineer who has climbed hundreds of peaks in Colorado (including the 200 highest peaks in the state), California (over 100 Sierra Peaks), the 99 peaks on the Sierra Club’s Desert Peaks List, 5 of the 7 (continental) summits, the highpoints of all 50 states, the highpoints of all 64 counties in Colorado, and many more.

Diane takes a more relaxed approach to hiking, with some of her favorite memories being of treks in New Zealand (Milford Track, Kepler Track), Peru (Inca Trail to Machu Picchu), and Nepal (Khumbu region / Gokyo Ri), and the local bathrooms after eating at a local street vendor’s stand in Amecameca, Mexico.

Charlie and Diane are also the authors of Highpoint Adventures – the Complete Guide to the 50 State Highpoints and The Essential Guide to Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve.  They love being outdoors, and love writing about the places they’ve been.  The Wingers moved from Denver several years ago, and live in Western Colorado.
